For more than a year Aboriginal Housing Corporation (AHC) has been prevented from accessing the Block, which is AHC land, to allow us to commence the Pemulwuy Project, a landmark redevelopment that will benefit the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Redfern and the broader community.
In February 2015 the AHC issued a trespass notice to members of the Redfern Aboriginal Tent Embassy (RATE), led by Ms Jenny Munro, who are trespassing on the Block. On 17 June 2015 and as a last resort, the AHC started legal action in the New South Wales Supreme Court.
Yesterday Ms Munro filed her defence. Today our legal team indicated to the Court that AHC will seek summary judgment to try to bring this long-running dispute to an end.
The Court set a timetable to progress our application for summary judgment, and the parties are in the process of confirming with the Court a date for the hearing of the application. We expect the hearing to take place early next month.
We look forward to commencing the Pemulwuy Project in the near future.
