On the 23rd October
2001 the Aboriginal Housing Company received a National Award for Excellence
in Community Housing in the category of Innovation for its Community Social
Plan for the Block. As the first Aboriginal housing company in Australia the
AHC has always been at the cutting edge of Indigenous Community Housing, however
this is the first time in its history that it has been nationally recognised
for its innovative work.
On the 16th September 2004 the AHC received the International 2004 CPTED Innovation Award from the International Security Management and Crime prevention Institute & the International CPTED Association, for its Community Safety Report. Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles have become an integral part of the new redevelopment plans for the Block, resulting in a comprehensive and sustainable crime prevention strategy. This award demonstrates an international recognition that the AHC has a solid understanding of the problems on the Block, and is the only organisation with a viable strategy to fix them.
